In Their Names: The Untold Story of Victims' Rights, Mass Incarceration, and the Future of Public Safety by Lenore Anderson

This is still a bit too faithful to authoritarian institutions to me despite the fact that the entire book is about the problems with said institutions. That said, I liked how this author discussed trauma and violence. She managed to do so with empathy towards everyone involved rather than focusing on side or another just to make a point. She doesn't see things through rose colored glasses and also is about to see each individual as a whole being.
I also like that she has a ton of ideas for how we can do better, many of which could easily be implemented today. A very good point she had was that so many efforts fail because those who were lobbying against things like trauma centers, shortened sentences, etc (eg cops and prosecutors) are then in charge of implementing the reform if it makes it through. So then it just so happens to fail
