Little Heaven by Nick Cutter
3.0
It's fitting that Stephen King gave the blurb for this, since it reads EXACTLY LIKE STEPHEN KING. If you like Stephen King's writing, or extremely long reads about profoundly depraved people, this is the thing for you. Like King, this author has a great talent for making everything gross. Each adjective serves to deepen the sense of horror and general "yuck" that permeates every scene.
What happens here? A trio of mercenary assassins gets hired by a woman to go up to an isolated religious compound to help her find her nephew.
Of course, religious compounds tend to be (even in real life) horrific.
There are weird, shapeless beasts that are made up of other animals basically cut apart and hot-glued to each other to make chimeras. There are monsters with giant hacked-open faces. There's a flute. There's a preference for victimizing children. There's a pastor with big hair and nefarious intent. There's sexual repression. THERE'S KOOL-AID.
The specifics of what go on are held back for spoilers, but it's GROSS, and it's LONG, and if you don't have the stomach of patience, stay away. Otherwise, it's a pretty solid pick.
