The Burning Shadow by Jennifer L. Armentrout

4.0

This was about a 3.5 star book for me, but I rounded up because I really had a hard time putting it down. I read most of it on a 4 hour flight and then stole moments throughout a weekend away to finish it.

As always, I don't think anybody writes chemistry as well as Armentrout does. I feel that way anytime I read a book by her. The scenes with Evie and Luc truly pop, and I found myself flipping ahead anytime they weren't in a scene together to see how much longer I'd have to wait for them to be together again. I think that there are some elements of their relationship that would have appealed more to a younger me, such as Luc's fairly controlling/patronizing behavior whenever Evie tries to take agency, but that probably has more to do with me being older than the intended audience than anything else.

I thought the plot moved along nicely, though it felt like it took Evie a bit to come to conclusions that seemed obvious. I wanted to jump in the book and force her to talk to her mom seeeeveral times. I enjoyed the secondary characters, as I always do in Armentrout's books. She writes banter so well. All in all, I'm always a fan and will read anything she puts out into the world because it's a master class in chemistry and always impossible to put down.
