I loved Thorpe’s “Dear Fang, with Love” and liked “The Girls From Corona del Mar” quite a bit, so I was very excited for this one. I was hoping my expectations weren’t too high. They weren’t. This book is so good and unique!
Margo so bright but not driven at her local college, entangled in an affair with a married professor. She is impregnated by this aloof man and everyone in her life tells Margo not to have it, but she does anyways out of spite. Single motherhood is harder than she even imagined at 20, especially financially. Her retired pro-wrestler father Jinx walks back into her life to help. She is inspired by his wrestler character, bringing that to OnlyFans to make some money. But things spiral out of control in many ways.
Margo is the kind of protagonist that’s so hard to like in theory- she makes horrible decisions that as the reader, you want to shake her out of. Yet, I loved her and rooted for her every step of the way. This book is a funny, heartbreaking, and has more depth that you would think would be on the page with this plot. The explorations of double standards based on gender and sexuality, motherhood, adult/minor power relationships were all in depth and well done. Also the third person narration was so interesting and added so much! I started reading this but then switched to audio, which Elle Fanning narrates so well. Highly recommend both formats!!!!
✨Content Warnings: Drug Abuse, Sexual Content, Pregnancy, Adult/Minor Relationship, Addiction, Infidelity, Medical Content, Abortion, Panic Attacks
