Silvina Ocampo's writing is an absolute spectacle - her short fiction is bizarre and complex and, at times, seemingly nonsensical. Having studied The Impostor for my English degree, the levels of meaning and psychoanalytical layers become apparent and stunning. The story entranced me, so I read the rest of this collection, and was left largely impressed. A few of the stories feel too short, and as a result, feel unsatisfying or unnecessary, and as with many short story collections, it eventually feels tiresome after binge-reading. However, every story is laced with poignant imagery of memory, a loss of identity, alienation, mental illness, dreams, and depravity. It's a fantastic amalgamation of magical realism, surrealism, and horror, and it works unbelievably well.
