Like a lot of folks, I have been struggling to read steadily in the world we live in these days but I've been excited about the potential of this book since I got an ARC in 2019. I moved with this book! I finally picked it up this year when I found myself missing Colorado a lot and wanting very much to be immersed in all things Rocky mountains. I think I made it to page 4 before I was annoyed beyond belief. The details were so wrong that I found myself looking up where the author is from (PNW if you are also curious) and realized that, from the start, this would make more sense not in Colorado. How could a college sophomore, who grew up in Utah (i.e. mountains) and is going to school in Boulder (hello, mountains) would be so dumb as to take off at night, with a storm coming, without enough gas, provisions, or even a freaking phone charger in a small car? Really? I won't go on a massive rant- I'll just cut it short and say this felt like a book set in Colorado without the proper atmosphere for such a dark premise by someone who has created a character that made so many dumb mistakes that it felt like it was personal.
