Piranesi by Susanna Clarke

I loved the initial whimsy and mystery surrounding this story from the beginning. It's set in a world that seems to make no sense in comparison with our own and leads us to wonder how the world works and how the main character lives there: where did he come from, how did he come to be, considering there are only two people living in the entire world? It kept me engaged right from the beginning and I loved exploring the House with him.

Then the story itself was solid throughout. The plot and intrigue were continually engaging as there were equal amounts of new information related to what the main character already knows and is sharing with us, information that is new to both the main character and the reader, and suspense and mystery in wondering what is actually going on given throughout the story. I think the book's length, being a bit shorter than most novels, was a good length for telling this particular story also, as it was short enough that it never felt like the story was dragging but was still long enough that there was ample time given to tell the story well.

If you like stories that are bit more whimsical with nonsense and impossibilities around every corner, I would highly recommend this one!
