John Henry by Julius Lester
5.0
Stunning both in pictures and words. The retelling of this tall tale envokes the interest of even the steady timing of the sun and moon. The metaphores are as large as John Henry's actions. I especially appreciate that for once the moral is artfully woven into the flow of the story instead of bluntly stated in the last line. This is the kind of literature that creates a love of reading in children, and the parents reading to them.
