An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz
4.0
This was a very necessary book for me--I thought I knew this history, but I did not. It is not at all a pleasant read. It is a story of unrelenting genocide, as official policy. She brings home the point pretty relentlessly, in killing chapter after chapter. As some others have said, the strength of this book is not in bringing out new historical research, and it seems likely there are a number of inaccuracies. But I think her overall argument is strong. And it is really important that Americans learn what really happened and stop believing all of these myths about our country's origins and founding philosophies. America was a militaristic colonizing power, from the very beginning. As I listened I kept having sick realizations...one illusion popping after another. It is definitely going to cause me to rethink everything I thought I knew about this country. I listened to it as an audiobook. It is a pretty condensed read, and did not take long.
