The History of World War I: Gallipoli & The Middle East 1914-1918 by Edward J. Erickson
3.0
Got inspired by Anzac Day and it seemed appropriate. The other books in this series have been quite heavy going. This was a bit dry too, and it’s really only a once-over-lightly look, but it cleared up a few confusing points. It was also good to read a reasonably unbiased account which looked closely at the Turkish side of things too. Also interesting to read about the Middle East and Caucasus campaigns, which usually get forgotten in the Gallipoli hysteria. Like with most publications about WWI the photos are mostly posed and don’t reflect the realities of life and death in war. The maps included are a bit vague at times too, but battlefields are pretty confusing anyway.
