Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson
5.0
Guys, this was so great.
It didn't make me gnaw my own arm off or scream into my closed fist, but I'm giving Mistborn five stars because every time I put it down all I could think about was getting back to it and finding out what happened next.
Kelsier? Fabulous. Iconic. My liege. My main man. My favorite kind of terrible omnipotent idiot. I would fight for the chance to follow him into the mouth of hell.
Vin? Great. A good hero, good character development, good setup for a future romance. I love her powers, I love her undercover work, and I love all the fights. Is she the Hero?? Is she a Feruchemist and an Allomancer like the Lord Ruler?!? Inquiring minds need to know.
Minor characters? Excellent. There was a whole cast of secondary people, all of which I remember, can keep straight, can distinguish their individual personalities and temperaments, and am fond of. That is an accomplishment for any book, especially an expansive fantasy.
Worldbuilding? Allomancy is super cool. A large part of this book is explaining Allomancy and training with Allomancy and using Allomancy and it's all clearly understandable and never gets boring. It's so interesting. And listen, so much of this world is still unknown. Half of the tension of this book is the mystery of the past, and of trying to unravel the mythos at the same time the characters are figuring it out.
What is the Deepness? What makes Vin's power special? Where do the mists come from? What are the unknown, secret metals? What was the ancient prophecy, and what role did the Lord Ruler play? This combination of clearly explained worldbuilding with constant mystery is lethally effective. I'M TRAPPED IN SUSPENSE. I NEED TO KNOW.
I've finished the book and I'm still on pins and needles waiting to find out what happens next. I need to get my hands on the next installment ASAP.
