Black Klansman: Race, Hate, and the Undercover Investigation of a Lifetime by Ron Stallworth

adventurous challenging dark emotional funny informative inspiring medium-paced

4.0

Black Klansman is the fascinating story of the author's time as a Black undercover cop investigating the revival of the Klu Klux Klan in Colorado Springs. Through insightful historical commentary, a thorough narrative, and hilarious twists and turns, Stallworth illustrates the complexities of this assignment and connects his work to modern day politics.

Featuring the titular assignment alongside undercover work Stallworth did on leftist organizations, Stallworth presents himself as a police officer with the intent to prevent violence and hate in Colorado Springs. In addition to retelling this narrative declaratively, Stallworth also inserts relevant historical context on topics like David Duke, the origin of the Klan's robes, and the film The Birth of a Nation to contextualize his story. Stallworth also does not shy away from sharing his own opinions on policing and radicalism in present and 1970s America.

While I tore through this audiobook in three days, I found Stallworth narration a little flat. Black Klansman is so fascinating that this element hardly matters, but I would say this book might be better suited as a read.
