Devil Is Fine by John Vercher

dark emotional reflective sad medium-paced

3.5

I really think this is a me issue and not the book. It's literary fiction with magical realism elements and I often struggle with both those things so I already knew this wasn't going to be a good fit for me. But I am reading through the Aspen Words longlist so I forged ahead. It is about a father's grief journey after the death of his son and those parts were reflective and haunting. But the jellyfish parts I just couldn't get into. There's a lot more in this novel - reflections on fatherhood, race and identity and it's packed into a relatively short novel.  As with a lot of literary fiction, I found this one to work better for me in print but I did enjoy listening to some of the narration on audio.
