Coraline by Neil Gaiman

5.0

I wonder how my other... whatever would try to tempt me into sewing buttons into my eyes.

My boyfriend and I read this together, a chapter or two every couple nights. I read while he snuggled up to me and enjoyed my spooky vocal intonation and voices. If y'all have never done something like that with your partner, I highly recommend it.

Onto the book. It's Coraline. It's freaking phenomenal. I love Coraline's extremely well developed sense of self, while it also still being very apparent that she is a kid. She deftly and cleverly works through the Other Mother's machinations until she's able to finally return home.

The Other Mother is an absolutely terrifying antagonist and one that mirrors things children may face often in their lives, someone who wants to hurt you while hiding behind a mask of love. An absolutely compelling and memorable villain.

I will say, I think that the Other Mother could have worked a bit more at luring Coraline into her web before springing the trap and the final bit with the hand is just a bit silly. These are very minor complaints though and I can see myself returning to this story in the future
