Ann Liang has done it again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Her and Sophie Gonzales are MY rom-com queens!!!!! If you’re looking for a cute romance check their books out fr fr!!!
This story follows Sadie, a model-student and perpetual people pleaser. She basically let’s everyone use her and step all over her, which was a little annoying. Like GIRL!!! GET UP!!!!!!!!!!! 😭 I just wanted to SHAKE her sometimes!!! Instead of standing up for herself, Sadie writes all of her frustrations in her email drafts, and then one day they get released, which like… obviously that was gonna happen! 🥴 It’s kind of ridiculous that somebody that intelligent and who cares so much about other people’s opinions would be careless enough to address all of these hate-emails to the people she dislikes, but okay… 🫥 Throughout the rest of the book we follow Sadie as she tries to make people like her again, and, obviously, as she gets closer to her academic rival (who was the recipient of most of her venting emails).
I liked Sadie and Julius’s dynamic, though I think their obsession with each other was borderline ridiculous, at times. 😬 Like, why do you hate each other THAT MUCH??? Being academic rivals and finding each other annoying? Sure. But sincerely saying that you HATE somebody and want them DEAD to their face was a bit too intense for a silly little romcom, to the point where it became unserious. 🫤🫤🫤
I still enjoyed seeing their bond grow, though! I liked seeing Sadie fall for Julius and having to deal with her intense feelings for him going from *dislike* to *like*. I would’ve liked to get a bit more insight into Julius’s attraction to Sadie, though… From the very beginning we see that he clearly likes her already (when he punched the guy who called her a bitch, literally memorized all of her emails to him, talked about her regularly to his family, tried to find time to be with her, etc), but is just too stubborn to admit it. I wish we could’ve learned about the moment and the reasons why he started liking her.
With that said, I still enjoyed their moments together. Julius was clearly pathetically in love with Sadie (@ god when’s it mY TURN??!!!?!), and seeing their interactions was always really fun. For some reason, though, this book didn’t leave me giggling and kicking my feet like Ann Liang’s other books… I can’t quite put my finger on what the “problem” was, but yeah… that’s the only reason I’m rating this 4* instead of 4,5*, like her other books.
Other than the ridiculous amount of times Sadie genuinely wished Julius would die, I think the only thing I kind of disliked was the number of times he grabbed Sadie by the wrists. I know it’s not a big deal, and he wasn’t really forceful or anything! But like, that scene in the end where he grabs her wrists and pins her to the wall, trapping her, was just so………… 😬 Once again, he wasn’t being forceful or anything!! But, idk…… I remember being a kid and seeing guys in anime grabbing girls by their wrists (sometimes using their physical strength to trap them) so anything close to that (even if the character isn’t being mean) just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. It’s genuinely just a personal ick. 😅
I also thought Sadie’s “confession” was suuuuper cringy lol. Like, her spilling her guts to her friend while Julius stands behind her, and the friend just calmly repeats her name instead of, idk??? Interrupting her or warning her he’s listening…????? Ridiculous!!!!!!!!
While I enjoyed both MCs and their arcs, I have to say that, just like in Ann Liang’s previous books, the SCs were kind of irrelevant… I would often forget about Sadie’s bff (Abigail) and about her mum and brother. I wish they had had more moments to shine and a bit more development.
Also, although I enjoyed what we got, I would’ve liked at least a little epilogue… 😳👉🏻👈🏻. I wanted to see them *actually* dating! Also, I WILL sue Ann Liang for not giving us a scene where Sadie and Julius went on a date where he shares stir-fried chicken with her (since it’s her favourite dish, but she hasn’t eaten it since her dad left because they only make it in servings of 2 at their favourite restaurant, and her mum and brother don’t like that dish). We were literally ROBBED!!!! 😤😤😤
So, overall, even though this was my least favourite Ann Liang book, it was still super fun, and I literally couldn’t put it down (I finished it in 1 day lol).
