The Ring of the Nibelung by P. Craig Russell

5.0

P. Craig Russell - one of the modern virtuosos of sequential storytelling - executes what might very well be his masterpiece in this epic, lavish, and utterly spellbinding adaptation of Richard Wagner's Ring cycle. Over the course of four stories, each an epic unto themselves - Rhinegold, The Valkyrie, Siegfried, and Gotterdammerung - Russell puts forth a perfect visual interpretation of the fantasy that has in varied ways inspired other works of equal greatness in the years since. Russell's writing is sublime, and his artwork is perfect here, not just in line and look, but in composition as well. The more we read, the more it feels like this has been waiting for Russel to adapt it all along. Oathtorn gods. A ring of power. Power and arrogance. Fear and wickedness. Love and betrayal. Will and fate. All come together in something so big and mythic it almost burns the eye to look upon on it. How lucky we are, then, that Russell devoted himself to such a wonderful and beautiful adaptation. For anyone who suggests comics is a low medium, or unable to express true genius and brilliance, let them read this and think again.
