Circe by Madeline Miller

2.0

There's not a lot that happens in Miller's Circe. In a defter hand, that waiting and loneliness might have been used to some purpose; to plumb depths of character, to tease out surprising truths. Here, Circe's inner life is rendered prettily, but it never sinks below the shallows. We never get to really wrestle with what's inside her. The best moments are those from The Odyssey told from her viewpoint, which means Miller only gets half credit at best for the viewpoint change. All in all, a pretty work, but less substantial than I was hoping for. If you want to read one of Miller's books, I'd recommend Song of Achilles over this by a long shot.
