A Disobedient Girl by Ru Freeman

3.0

Family and love...what does it mean? caste and honor can it exist? Here is a story of a young maid indentured to a family for as long as she can remember. All she dreams of are the things in the world that would make you feel human, like everyone else, shoes, soap, a bath, attention, love but her position in life doesn't allow that. So what should she do? create a plan to hurt those who have robbed her of those basic necessities? but how? what would be cruel enough? what would bring shame? After all is said and done you find a woman lost, no identity, no background, no knowledge of self and when she is enlightened it is seeming all to late.

I enjoyed this book, it was a learning experience for me because as an African American I never really thought about how hard indentured servitude was on those forced in to it. It is as comparable and hard as being a slave was, you were seen as nothing but chattel. It's rather unfortunate. This was a good read, I must admit I skipped around some of Biso's story. I was more interested in what was going on with Latha, even though the two stories were closely tied together one seemed to lag more than the other.
