This book was horrible. I thought this was going to be about a young woman who is thrust into politics and is fighting for the throne. Instead, I got a weird amalgamation of half-baked science fiction and incestual gods. The main character is about as interesting as watching paint dry. The world-building is nonexistent. The rest of the characters are no better. This could have been a brilliant book about how love makes us complete but no it's just about sex. Honestly, why push the point that the gods are siblings if you are going to make their whole relationship just about sex? It's gross. Do you know what else is gross, pushing that this god character is fundamentally a child and then referencing people having sex with said child? Honestly, I don't know how I pushed my way through this. It was terrible. Maybe some people will like it but it just wasn't my cup of tea. I will probably not be reading anything else by this author.

NKJ is a continuous safe go-to for great stories. Of course I loved Nahadoth, but Yeine and Sieh were amazing protagonists. Even the villains were great, although I would've liked it just a touch more if Yeine had had at least one positive female relationship in the story. With that said, the men (and/or male presenting) on her side were diverse in personalities and enjoyable. Can't wait to read more!

Being a big fan of The Broken Earth trilogy and The City We Became, I wanted to read Jemisin's first novel. However, I felt a little let down by this one. Jemisin is a master of lore and world building, and this book is no exception. Her narrative style, as always, blows me away. However, I felt the characters weren't as fleshed-out as they could be. The incest and sexual abuse were also hard to get over. This is not to say that any story that depicts dark topics are automatically bad, but it's just not my cup of tea. Still, I wanted to stick through it to the end, and will admit the ending's payoff is good. Casaundra Freeman's narration is also excellent.
