AAAHHH MY GOSH I MUST HAVE MOAAAR IT IS SO GOOD. The artwork is great. The concept of Sleepless Knights and world building is good. I love Poppy and Cyrenic. I love her little fox Bini. REPRESENTATION MATTERS. And I wish I read this while I was younger. Sigh

Ohhhh my goodness, I loved this SO much that I am almost freaking out a little.
I've been so disappointed by so many graphic novels lately--either the art is lovely but the story and characters are lacking/flat/rushed, or the story is good but the art is less than wonderful.
THIS book has both a fantastic, creative, complex story and wonderful characters AND gorgeous art. The worldbuilding is done well also, and it's such a lovely world, too--I want to explore more of it with Poppy and Cyrenic! (And GOSH, the bodyguard/princess romance...I love that kind of devotion, so I say YES PLEASE.)
I love this. I LOVE THIS SO MUCH, I HAVE NO WORDS. <333

Rereading this first half so I can remember the context for the final issue. My local comic book store kindly found me the single issue I’d been searching for for about two years now.
I’d say this is 3.5 stars. It’s still a very enjoyable plot and I love the character designs, but there’s a certain distance I always experience from Sarah Vaughn’s writing. I often feel like her characters are more folkloric than anything. I personally prefer to get a more intimate connection to characters, but sometimes I make exceptions. Patricia A. McKillip or Ursula K Le Guin are good examples of this. But again, both McKillip and Le Guin are masters at balancing folkloric details with little key insights into their characters everyday lives.

3.5 maybe? I'll have a better idea of a rating when I finish the second volume.

Damn it legit left me on that cliffhanger?!?!
So two part review: writing and art.
I thought the writing was phenomenal! The plot and pacing of the story was on point and I was drawn into this world from the very first few pages. It’s highly political yet I never felt like I was drowning in the world building. A+ work!
Art:
I’m not a huge fan of the art style, I like more smooth and cute lines and brighter/saturated colors BUT the artistic storytelling was amazing! I love it when the art can tell the story without words because that to me is mind blowing!
Totally would recommend this to anyone that likes fantasy politics with some hints of romance 😍

I loved this. The artwork is good, and the story is fabulous. You have a illegitimate princess whose father the king just died with her sleepless knight, those who take a vow to shorten their lives and protect without ever needing sleep. There are assassination attempts, magic, and a neat fantasy world. Its a historical style fantasy and it absolutely worked for me. Can't wait to read more
