The thing is with short stories, is that once you start getting attached to the characters, the story ends and you have to start anew with literary strangers as the cycle repeats. Short stories are thus as enjoyable as the language in which they are written and the feelings they evoke, and I do not believe Camus delivered with this one. Perhaps reading it in French would have been a different experience.

Když se Janina stejně vrátila, Marcel se ještě neprobudil. Zabručel však, když uléhala, a pár vteřin nato se prudce vztyčil na lůžku. Promluvil, a ona nechápala, co říká. Vstal a rozsvítil světlo, které ji udeřilo rovnou do tváře. Potácivým krokem došel k umyvadlu a dlouze se napil z láhve minerálky, která tam stála. Chystal se vklouznout pod přikrývky, když vtom se na ni nechápavě zadíval, kleče už jednou nohou na posteli. Plakala. Slzy se jí hrnuly a nebyla s to je zadržet. „To nic není, miláčku,“ řekla, „to nic není.“

Klamali mě, jen království zla je bez trhlin, klamali mě, pravda je hranatá, těžká, hustá, nesnáší odstíny, dobro je sen, plán, který se neustále odsouvá a sleduje se s vyčerpávajícím úsilím, hranice, jíž se nikdy nedosáhne, jeho vláda je nemožná. Jen zlo může jít až do krajnosti a vládnout absolutně, jen jemu je třeba sloužit, aby bylo nastoleno jeho viditelné království, a potom se uvidí; co to znamená potom, jedině zlo je přítomné, pryč s Evropou, s rozumem a s ctí a s křížem.
