So much gorgeous art! I thought I'd be annoyed, but I wasn't at all. That said, I'm not sure if I managed to miss parts of the story or if it was intentionally secondary to the art? Am I trying to hard to read things into the pages that aren't there because adventures! Yay! Maybe? Probably.

Two princesses forced from their respective kingdoms due to a coup, take up adventuring with a fire spirit named Yonder, encountering mysteries and monsters together. I loved the beautiful, colorful illustrations in this book, and getting to see the characters reinterpreted by a new artist on every chapter, seeing some of my favorites (Emily Carroll) and getting to meet new artists all in the same project. The story wasn't quite as interesting as the art, but for me the art and characters are enough incentive to go on to Volume 2 and hope the plot catches up. Be sure to check out the website for the project too, there's all sorts of extras including webcomics and a free soundtrack for volume 2! http://spera-comic.com/

I picked this up at my library, and it had a great premise. But it was boring! - either pedestrian or action that had no real teeth.

Just finished reading Spera which has GOOD POTENTIAL for an all ages comic, but the author needs to one, pick one or two artists, and two, create a cohesive story line not several mini stories strung together if he insists on using multiple artists. It leaves a good story with a lot of potential feeling hollow. And that makes me sad because this comic has the potential to be something phenomenal. It felt like a poor attempt to copy "Flight" and "Amulet". Both of which are good all ages comics. What Amulet has that Spera does not, is consistently awesome artwork. That's what holds Amulets' sometimes "blah" story line together. Kazu Kibuishi has a lot of talent, and it shows when Amulets story lacks, Spera needs to have both art and story to be GREAT. It's not Flight, and it acts like it is and I find that rather annoying. Some of the stories that follow a more linear plot flow well. But later it's like that author forgot what he wrote about in the beginning. I really want to like this comic, but I might try to pick it up via library before shelling out the cash to buy volume two. If nothing else read the first few issues of this, they at least tend to flow well.

I really enjoyed this! Two princesses, their fire dog, and loot cat with an eyepatch going on adventures. It has it all going on!
Just a warning, I was really drawn to the art, but the art in the comic is actually drawn by several artists depending on the story/chapter. Not that it's bad, some of the different art styles are really good and fitting to the story.
This book was shelved in the kid's section, but there's nothing shallow about it. Check it out if you want a good fantasy adventure.

I was a bit annoyed with how the art style changed after every chapter. Does anyone know if there was a particular reason this was so?
Apart from that, this was a solid book.

I got this book as I was looking for other work by Emily Carroll. She is one of the authors. I stayed for the man other talented authors whose styles were so unique. I was sucked in my the characters and the adventure.
