I feel like it has to be addressed that giving a rating to a diary such as this is absurd. I greatly enjoyed reading this and loved the insights gain from not only firsthand experience but also the retellings of daily life in unimaginable circumstances. I was reading a lot of reviews completely trashing the book and I need everyone to remember, !! This diary was absolutely not written for your entertainment!! This is a historical text of a girl who was never able to release her works as a writer herself and the idea that she could be criticized for the thoughts she wrote for herself screams that people have a gross view of the world and are likely losers. In spite of that, the book is amazing and I was continually amazed at how this fourteen-year-old was able to perceive and describe the world. Be good to each other.

Anne Frank had a way with words and she made even the most mundane things interesting to read about. If she would have survived, there is no doubt she could have been a wonderful novelist. That just makes this story even worse when you realise how so many people like Anne never got a chance in this world due to the bigotry of a few.
Even though virtually nothing happens in the book, it keeps you interested and hooked on your seat just to keep knowing what is going to happen to these Jews who are in hiding against an empire out to destroy them. It's about her relationships with her family and how she is forced to grow up in these cramped quarters just in two years.

Absolutely one-of-a-kind.
It's extraordinary that the diary entries of a teenage girl can be so powerful. That's the thing: Anne was just a normal teenage girl. She argued with her parents, she worried about her period, she pondered crushes on girls and boys. She also spoke about gender inequality, wealth inequality, politics. She was a normal girl with a normal diary, writing during one of the most significant periods in history and somehow that blew me away. I'm not a history nerd in the slightest but this book has rejuvenated my interest in WWII.
One of the most heartbreaking things about this book is the few moments of self-awareness, I suppose you could call it, when Anne ponders publishing this diary and what it would be like if others could read it. The abrupt end to the diary entries also broke my heart and was a painful reminder of the reality of the story.

Reread as an adult
Rereading this book as an adult and with the new additions, was quite a new experience - especially knowing the fate of Anne Frank. When I read "Anne's diary ends here" my heart sank. What a complex character Anne was, and what a priceless gem this diary is.
