Absolutely everyone should read it, for obvious reasons. I don't really know how to explain my feelings about this book. It's sort of awful to get through, because the whole time you are just completely overcome with dread, and it just carries on swelling until you reach the end - 'Anne's Diary ends here.' By that last line, you really are just flattened by how terrible a loss it really was. It's genuinely horrific, but I'd hope that goes without saying. I hope she's at peace now, along with every other victim.

I planned to finish this book before visiting the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam. I went there on 5th Oct 2023 😅 Only a year and a half late! Let’s hope 2025 is the year I set aside more time to read. My slowness does not relate to my enjoyment of the book. What an important story and what an eloquent, deeply thoughtful, self-aware, brave and intelligent young person Anne was. Her hope toward the end of her diary was heartbreaking. The afterword with the context of the war was a good inclusion and I had to wipe away tears on the bus reading what happened to Anne and her family. Never again, for anyone.

wow what an insight into life in those times. it really is crazy how all she wanted was for her legacy to last beyond her death but she never got to see it form.
i find it interesting and unusual that the audiobooks from the library, and my physical copy are worded completely differently! my books wording was much more 1940s teenage girl for my liking

I found the book quite impactful and harrowing. However, I do feel a bit conflicted on her diary having been published, as it is rather clear she did not plan for that to happen. I understand that is often the case with diaries, but since it was her father who published it I have always felt a bit uneasy.

Some notable quotes:

"For one fleeting moment I thought, 'Him and his lies. I'll smack his ugly mug so hard he'll go bouncing off the wall.'"
"And keep trying to find a way to become what I'd like to be and what I could be if... if only there were no other people in the world."
