A gloriously shimmering and captivating novel, with a mystery at its heart that keeps you turning its pages.

Tired of reading books about supposedly golden girls named Daisy whom men are inexplicably obsessed with

This was my second ever DNF.
I really wanted to love it.
I struggled getting into the story, I found that it was very wordy, and a bit too descriptive. I kept getting lost on the pages. I just couldn't get in to it. Willing to give it another go in a few months.

bit sloppy and vague
all of the twists were very easy to guess
but interesting premise and love the commentary on the idea of identity and how malleable it is

I really struggled with this read and now that I’ve read through a few reviews, I understand why.
As reported by others, this book is slow moving. Nothing *really* happens for 60-70% of the book. It’s very wordy and the characters are all self-involved and unlikable, though this is intentional I think.
I assumed the twist quite early on but will say it was very well written and there was another surprise that I hadn’t seen coming.

Overall, this book was okay. It took me a long time to get through, but as I reached the last 100 pages I was glad I’d stuck with it.

A superb coming-of-age tale, set in an evocative no-man’s land between then and now, ambition for more or settling for the life you’re born into, where beautiful people meet the reality of a life of poverty and neglect. The light-touch writing belies much darker truths, this is a compelling page-turner that has much to say on identity, class and the attraction of reinvention, making it a great summer read.
