I wanted a change of pace from what I usually read, and this did the trick. I see why the guy’s work is so popular now!

I can't say enough good things about this book. My first Tom Clancy novel and absolutely not my last. This massive book is unputdownable. Part crime thriller, part military adventure, part political drama, this book has EVERYTHING.

Drug lords, crooked cops, Russians, government leaks, military battles, special ops team covert operations, cold-blooded murder, torture, Vietnamese prison camps, ocean chases... I mean... it's almost too much awesomeness for one book.

One of my top thrillers of all time. Can't wait to read RAINBOW SIX and everything else I can get from the John Clark universe, then I'll likely go back and read all the Jack Ryan books.

Can't wait.

I picked up this book as my first attempt to delve into the whole Jack Ryan universe. I have to say, it was a disappointing beginning. It was bland and anticlimactic, with a bit too much of chauvinism for my taste. I found Kelly to be overrating himself most of the time, only to prove to be somewhat mediocre in situations where he was supposed to shine. I'm not sure if this was intentional on Clancy's part. After all, it's the origin story of the the supposedly legendary Jack Ryan. Even Jack Ryan had to start somewhere, right? Well, I don't know. But I'll give the second book a chance to prove me wrong.

A cerebral hero-fantasy vengeance plot that draws some interesting comparisons between war and vigilantism.

A complete waste of 20+ hours of audiobook listening, I was hoping that it got better. It never did.

Don’t let the 3 stars discourage you from reading. This is a solidly good novel. I enjoy the good vs. bad and the writing was suspenseful and enthusiastic. The problem I had with this novel is that it didn’t wrap up. I wonder if the author had a deadline and just decided to type “the end” without wrapping up. The story line with the prisoner left me wondering what happened? It was a fun character relationship and much of the book was around his rescue and this story line just ended. Here is a bit of a spoiler and what about the dirty cops story line. There was no retribution or anything on this story line.
