This book is sometimes a pain to read. Overly bombastic and flowery language abounds, to the point where it’s just kind of cringe worthy. The author continually tries and fails to evoke some sort of supernatural imagery and extreme hyperbole by wrenching his word choice into the realm of “WTF is this overwrought self important crap.”

Here’s to hoping this series is over soon, I’m kind of committed now, I just don’t want to read more bombastic pompous unnatural descriptions.

This book is only for true fans of 40K Who just absolutely have to follow the story no matter how poorly written a book is, and those who do not care about well written novels.

The worst siege of Terra book. Both times I’ve read the series I’ve put down the book at the exact same grueling section.

Great book, loved reading it with my wife. She's a massive Warhammer fan and I love learning the lore with her. The characters are great, even if a majority of them aren't great people. Can definitely see how Warhammer and Dune might be connected.

Following Saturnine was always going to be hard but I enjoyed this for what it was. The titan battles were fun and the perpetual story was a nice aside

Very, very good. A key BL/HH writer pulling out all the stops.

Another cracking build in the Horus Heresy, with the only flaw being it requires you to care about Titans and... I do not.

The review will contain spoilers and is, of course, just my very personal opinion :) .
Heard it as a audiobook.
Overall it is a fine book and a GREAT audiobook, worthy of a 3,5 rating.
The narrator, Jonathan Keeble, is as always phenomenal. The range of voices, accents and emotion he can elicit is simply stunning.

The story in itself has great, bad and worst of all, boring moments.

The Bad:
Ollenaus Person arc - The sudden introduction to his team and no introduction to their purpose/mission was disorientation.
The journey they go through is happening in cool and exciting places, but the characters are boring. With no connection to them, it is difficult to care for their safety. There are some major revelations in their journey, but with no feeling for the characters it is difficult to care.
Every time they had a chapter I wanted to zoom through it, but stuck with it in hope of something great would come. It did not. Only Jonathan Keeble's narration kept me going through these pages.

The Average:
Corswain - Got little time, was not really explained why/where they came from or why. They fulfilled their mission, but only the battle
and their interaction with other Imperials was cool. Rest (not that there was much) was OK. Seems like it was forced in.
Keeler - Following Saturnines depiction is difficult. But the cloak and dagger / crime-novel approach was.. weird. Didn't really feel invested in what where happening, except for the inquisitor-like guard, Hellick Mauer, that accompanied them carried the story in the beginning, but fell of later on..

The Great:
Dorn - Great showing of the Primarch and his interaction with the officers of the defence. The only issue was that there were not more of him. But the other books in the series fixes that. Great!
The Titans (!!) - Simply awesome. The different types, the clans, the battle and the foe! All great and filled with intrigue!
Shiban Khan - Moving story! Brought a tear to my eyes more than once and felt like it reflected the return of hope in hopelessness. Simply great!
Katsuhiro - The common guardsman in a world of horrors. Absolutely riveting, following their journey. The way the battlefield is described, their horror and their faith!
Great stuff!
