- My stories were crap, and it took me about a quarter of the time I said it did to produce them; the 'Record' always got my first drafts. I was sick of interviewing optimistic community activists and promising high school students. I was waiting for something to happen. -

Reasonably good little thriller. Invokes a sense of time and place very well. The everything that happens is obvious from the start - all very "noirish" clichés, but the author is clever in that she spells this out in the first few pages while teasing the possibility of inversion.
This books main problem - and its one which most of the Kindle Singles I have read suffer from - is it's length. I can't help but feel there was a first class stylish FULL LENGTH thriller in the works here, that has been stripped back to its barest bones to fit in with an arbitrarily word count imposed on the author.

It's crying out for more characterisation, more motivation, and - perhaps most importantly in a book with the central premise of using classic Noir cinematic tropes - more twists!

Definitely felt incomplete due to how short it is. A the pieces of an enticing noir story are there but either didn’t have enough time to come to fruition or were introduced so fast that you couldn’t help but be like “ok, we’re doing this now.”
