It's been a while since I've read this so I don't remember the plot clearly, which suggests there's not much to it. I do remember Green's usual brilliance at writing world-weary characters though, which is a guaranteed 4-stars.

My first Graham Greene (apart from some short stories) so unlike the other reviewers, I have nothing to compare it to. That said, quite enjoyable - liked the way in the first chapter he bounced among the interior monologues of the characters - a bit confusing at first, yes, but interesting style. And while some of the characters could have been excised, overall very interesting (and yes, a bit dated; so it goes). All in all, i found it to be what Greene himself would call it - an entertainment.

A good story but full of mean-spirited cliches - enough to put you off Graham Greene.

There are glimpses of what a brilliant novelist Greene would become.

Book club pick for April 2009 - which turned into May and June of 2009 as well. I quite enjoyed it, but found that it required time and focus, which I'm often sadly lacking. Regardless, a taut story that I enjoyed and am looking forward to discussing with my friends!
