Quite an odd story. Even though it's the first book, I felt like I was plopped in the middle and there were confusing things about the characters and the situation. I plowed through because I was interested in the world and the ideas, but ultimately wasn't very satisfied.

Gay hippo cowboys! That's how I described it to all my friends. It was a super fun and interesting historical fiction! I love the play off of possibly real events and had so much fun exploring the world. It was a great light read.

DNF at 30%. I just didn’t care enough and I don’t think old Western style is for me. The concept and actual history behind the thought of bringing hippos to live in American waterways is interesting but the character and storyline being followed in the first half just wasn’t holding my attention and I needed to move on.

Good idea. HORRID WRITING. One cliche after another. No character development. Skip it.
