Reread as I prep myself to read the Thrones books next month!

It’s been over 3 years since I first read this, and wow I remembered nothing.

That is not a reflection on this book at all, it’s just between reading this in January 2022 to now, I’ve read nearly 500 books and I have obviously oversaturated my brain with fantasy!

However, I enjoyed this way more than my initial review of 3 stars. It’s fast paced, I love the way the characters are written and their relationships with one another. Small warning, do not read this when hungry, because the food sounds so delicious that you’ll want to order Italian repeatedly.

Immediately diving into book 2!

What a wonderful world this book is set in. I loved this Palermo, I loved all the witchy stuff and I loved the peaks in hell and its creatures. Emilia was a main character I really liked, you could travel along with her emotionally and her decisions and actions made a lot of sense to me. Her Prince of Hell was mostly very intriguing and I'm so curious to find out more about him (hopefully in the second part). It was an exciting story with a good ending and a great build up for the next book. Now I need to find me some Italian food, I think...

The concept was so interesting and the story should have had me hooked but I just couldn’t do it. I almost never DNF after starting a book, but I gave up after a couple weeks of picking it up and putting it down. It was too much telling instead of showing for me so I never really felt immersed. But then other information was never told at all, the kind of info that helps you sink into the world — what time period is it? What is the city like? The buildings? The clothing? Anything to give me a visual of the world would have helped to get into it.

If you’re someone who doesn’t mind a narrative that literally tells you everything point blank through internal monologue or dialogue, you will enjoy it more than I did. Maybe someday I’ll give it another try.
