Reading books you enjoyed as a child can often be a mistake. I remembered Daine as having a particularily gritty background, and the Stormwings remain awesome, but this book is painfully Mary-Sueish. Nothing is really a challenge to her, especially as she's friends with a lock-picking baby dragon. Called Kitten. Too sickly by half.

I will perservere with my reading of the series because I'm curious if the third book (my favourite) will hold up.

A wonderful, young adult, story of nobleman trying to take the throne and destroying their own land in the processes. Throw in some mythical creatures, wizards, and animals trying to stop them and you've got a fun read and a new twist on a great story. The main character, Daine, grows as a person and in her powers. The only story hiccup was the cast was almost too wide to care about. And action scenes where halting. But none of that took away from the story.

Always a delight to meet the Brokefang and the wolf pack, this was and to see Diane start addressing her racism(/speciesm?) against Stormwings. Although I love Numaire, it's also good to see Diane acting independent of her mentor and succeeding.

Daine further develops her magical abilities; meets some great new friends, learns a bit of tolerance and solves some huge problems. In all a very fun continuation of the series!
