Read this with my son going into 2nd grade - it's part of his school district's One Book, One Community. It's geared for 4th graders and I agree that content wise, many of the topics went over my son's head. However, we both loved the story - wonderful characters and a great story to cover topics including the Great Depression, poverty, family and attitudes towards life.

I really enjoyed this book! I liked that it was set during the Great Depression, but even more so enjoyed the location of the Florida Keys and the story of island life during this time. Well written and from the perspective of a wise and funny little girl.

After her mother gets a new job––and jobs are scare during the Depression –– young Turtle is sent to Key West to live with her aunt. A plucky, quirky narrator, a fully realized setting, and an extended family that includes a gang of boys who ply their skills at curing diaper-rash -- it's a story with plenty of charm and spunk.

One Sentence Review: I was a big fan of this Paper Moon meets The Little Rascals story, and the fact that the writing lives up to the fantastic protagonist doesn't hurt matters any either.

An excellent book about a girl sent to live with distant relatives in Key West, set during the Great Depression. Read my full review at How I Feel About Books.

A great insomnia read. Set in Key West during the Depression before it became a tourist destination, this is the tale of Turtle, whose mama had to take a housekeeping job with a woman who hated children and got stuck visiting her relatives. She meets the Diaper Gang of boy babysitters and goes on a hunt for buried treasure.

I really liked this historical fiction story set in the Florida Keys during the great depression. Reading middle grade novels is a good break from heavy adult fiction.
