This book is similar to ‘a tree grows in Brooklyn’ it’s set from the 1990’s-2020’s. It shows how one family in Britain deals with grief, expectations and how they can change a person over time.

After sitting on my TBR list for years & having heightened expectations, this book was sadly disappointing. The emotions and relatedness gripped me within the first couple of chapters, but quickly, the book turned into a roller coaster of climax after climax. I couldn't differentiate it from the dramatics of a Pakistani drama.

4.5 - What an emotional read!! Loved this book. Again, it touched on so many important topics in the South Asian community and I could definitely resonate with some of the cultural elements. It also had a lot of funny elements which made it an enjoyable read.

I also loved The Family Tree by Sairish Hussain- a multi generational story of a British-Muslim family spanning thirty years that had me completely mesmerised. Such was the poise and strength of Hussain’s characters that I became completely invested in them, as she puts them through the emotional wringer, giving a rich and authentic portrayal of their experiences, both the sadness and the joy. There is tragedy, grief and heartbreak, but you leave the book feeling their resilience and fortitude. Although I always think it’s a reviewing cliche to say that characters stay with you, in the case of this book I think that’s totally true, as they are still popping into my head a few weeks on from finishing this one. Beautiful writing and a poignant and unforgettable book, shrouded in tragedy, but also alive with hope and redemption bolstered by its perceptive commentary and exploration of the bigoted and less pleasant aspects of multi-cultural Britain. Recommended.

Pretty brutally sad and harrowing at various points but well written and engaging. Follows a Muslim family living in Bradford through a series of really awful events in their lives.

I really loved this. The characters were believable, the story a mix of happiness and sadness. It was just brilliant. I read most of it in 2 days, but then stopped due to work. Not the books fault at all. Would definitely read other books by this author.
