I just didn't care enough to try to understand the foibles of these characters. Usually I love Margaret Atwood. I don't know what happened here. Either I wasn't able to pay attention, or she wasn't able to write something engaging...

As with most of Atwood's novels, the prose was a pleasure to read, but the three main characters were almost entirely unlikeable. She no doubt did that on purpose. This book and the characters' perspectives felt deeply personal to the author, as if she was writing herself, her husband, and his ex-wife onto the page.
Although the content was slightly dull and depressing, Atwood is such a phenomenal writer that even her depressing work is still an overall pleasure to read.

Felt very 1970’s era As the World Turn the way the love triangle was plotted out. Of course, with Atwood crafting it, it went much, much deeper than that. Elizabeth may be one of my favorite characters she’s written, Nate one of the most irritating. Round and round the story went and it was enjoyable at every turn

This is my favorite Atwood book - the characters are SO intricately written. You really see and experience the people behind the plot, and Atwood brings incredible insight into relationships between men and women, as well as interactions between family members. I went with four stars instead of five simply because I'm still not entirely sold on Atwood's 'I refuse to resolve my plot lines' style of ending her novels. However, after reading Life Before Man, I'm starting to think that Atwood is much more interested in creating characters than in completing stories, and that really pays off in this book.
