OK, I'm a bit hooked on this series now. I still have a hard time with the heroine being so, um, liberated in the 20's and not be criticized for it, but I can get past that. Not the same caliber of P.D. James, but entertaining nonetheless.

Not my favorite book of the series, but then I've never been a fan of the circus.

Not the strongest book and too many clowns for my taste.

Phryne seems COMPLETELY different in this book. She's bored and decides to help some of her friends solve some mysterious happenings at their circus. So in typical Phryne fashion, she up and joins the circus and is completely out if her comfort zone - no fancy clothes, no fancy cars, no Dot to wait on her. It was very interesting and while I enjoyed the circus portion of the novel and the case of who killed Mr. Christopher, I was rather confused by a couple of the side stories. Also, Miss Parks (I believe...) had a very interesting story that could have been very cool to learn more about but it turned out to be very secondary.

Phryne is asked by carny friends to help discover what’s up with a circus they perform for that seems to have a bit of bad luck. She is not inclined to do it but they issue it as a challenge and she’s bored. This overlaps with Jack’s case of a hermaphrodite who has been killed in a boarding house. Phryne learns a new skill as a bareback rider and takes 2 lovers. Circus is half owned by a gang using it as a cover to help criminals escape. Phryne almost raped. Thrown in the animal cage, but luckily not the cat cage, but the bear’s (Bruno who liked Phryne).
Phryne glad to go back to her comfortable life. Enjoyed Matthias (Jo-Jo the clown).

The first I didn't like. Rather than focuses on Phryne, the story was on a number of other characters with a bit about her. It was also a convoluted tale about murder in a boarding house, a link to a circus, and a link to criminal gangs that ended up creating an overblown and yet not that interesting story.

Love the similarities and differences between the books and the show.
It's actually been long enough since I watched, I couldn't fully remember this episode.
Loved the end twist with the bear, that was really good
