I'm glad I continued reading this series. Book 2 is much better with the pacing of events and the plot though I still don't like Max. Moth on the otherhand is funny. I hope he's still on the next one. I'll read the last book but not Max's past ( ^∀^)

An insightful look into the trauma of war based in a fantasy realm with a unique and interesting magic system.
This book features nicely rounded characters who are well developed (even the villains)
Despite all of this, pacing issues made this a difficult read for me.
It often felt as if there was too much happening, or not enough. There were many exciting pages, interspersed by pages that felt like an effort to push through.
I consumed the last half of the book in audio format which made it much more palatable, but if it weren’t for the audiobook I may have DNF-ed (or at least taken ages to finally finish the book)
Unsure if I will complete the trilogy unfortunately.

“I had long ago stopped believing in the gods. I already lived my life under the control of so many mortal men— it brought me no comfort to think of immortal ones pulling the strings, too.”

The beginning of Max and Tisaanah’s storyline felt dragged and repetitive. Things were happening, yet they were also not. I hope that makes sense. I did like that it’s now more political than the first book. Tisaanah and Max struggled a lot in this book and I feel so bad for them. I love how strong their relationship was and they would literally die for each other.

Aefe’s POV was a welcome addition for me. Aefe’s storyline and its connection to Tisaanah’s and Max was something I really enjoyed. It was also interesting to see how the Fey were like in this world. I hope there’ll be more information about them in the next book.

Overall, this book was okay. I found some parts boring but there were also parts that I enjoyed. Will I be reading the next book? Yes, but not immediately. It’s 700+ pages and with my experience with this one, I’m not eager to jump into it yet. That ending was hella crazy though.

This book stressed me out. It was so intense at the end, I gave myself a tension headache from grinding my teeth. As far as I’m concerned, Nura is unredeemable. And poor Max. Gah. I think the final book is going to be a doozy.

A little too long, but overall enjoyable. I loved learning about Aefe and all about her identity, and am excited to see how it continues on in the next book. This is definitely suffering from second book syndrome, but again still fairly enjoyable.

slow paced for the most part, yet still kept my attention until the end. I will say I was much more focused on the secondary story line throughout the book — and that plot twist?!?!?!
full body chills.
