This series did not suffer from second book syndrome!!!!

I was enraptured the whole time! This was a great story. Definitely similar to Throne of Glass. I wasn’t a huge fan of the first book, but I had to know how the series ended. I’m glad I did, for I would’ve missed out on this one!

This book reminded me of how I felt for the first half of Heir of Fire, or during Kingdom of Ash. Our cast is split up from the beginning, and that made it hard to be motivated to read the story. Plus, we’re introduced to an entirely new set of characters, seemingly out of nowhere.

However, once I was hooked, I was hooked.

reading about Tisaanah’s and Max’s experience in Zeryth’s war was what I thought the entire book would be about. Boy was I WRONG. the introduction of Aefe and the entire Fey storyline was intriguing and confusing and made no sense until the 80% mark but when it DID, it all fucking clicked. Also, Caduan being ALIVE??? Ishqa’s betrayal??? There were so many times in the last 25% of this book where my jaw was on the floor.

Also - Nura? Yeah, FUCK her. I felt so much sympathy for her during her POV chapter but that all fucking shattered when I realized what she did to Max. What she said about Max during his trial. Where she put him. That bitch is INSANE.

The entire world is about to feel Tisaanah’s wrath and I am so ready for it.

I wasn't sure I would continue this book after the first one, but this is one of the rare situations where I think the sequel is better than the first. The way this book had me investing in the political system and the ethics of war has never happened for me before lol. Main characters also started feeling significantly more dimensional in this book.

So much happens in this book, so much that I did not expect. Part of what I love about this series is that it’s original. It’s not a retelling of x or y in a very obvious way. Already downloaded #3

absolutely crying over the fact Caduan didn’t actually die and he went back for Aefe!!!! And now she’s an entire living being again which is crazy. I was really hoping for a Nura redemption arc but clearly she is the main villain. Max got the absolute dogshit end of the stick so I’m interested see how this plays out. Felt kind of like an idiot not realizing sooner that Reshaye and Aefe are the same person. I didn’t realize Aefe’s timeline was taking place years prior so when it was revealed it was like everything clicked for me.

I'm not sure how to write a review without spoilers since this is book 2 of a trilogy, but I will say that I loved book 1 and book 2 held up really well too.

📝 As in book 1, the characters and world building in book 2 continue to be excellent, the plot is pretty action packed and goes to both expected and unexpected places. And of course, since this is book 2 of 3 in a fantasy series, we don't get a HEA, but rather conclude on a bunch of unresolved conflict.

🎧 The audiobook actors are the same as book 1 and are still very good with varying accents/voices for the different characters/regions/classes.

🌶️ Spice level is pretty low. We get a couple intimate scenes, but this is primarily a fantasy book with romantic plotlines, rather than a romantasy.

For about half of the novel our main chapters are apart during the ongoing war. During this time we are introduced to a new POV which all comes to an epic conclusion when all the pieces come together. I DID not see the plot twists coming in this one. I did unfortunately find the majority of the book to be quite slow compared to book 1. I am hoping this was because of the large amount of character development that was necessary in this book.
