Although this book did not have a very interesting storyline, I had a really good time reading it. It was an easy read, but something about the writing made it really satisfying to get through. Not only that, it taught me about the fairytale legend of Baba Yaga, which has helped me on so many trivia questions. I would recommend this book for upper elementary and middle schoolers, not necessarily for a great story, but for a great way to get into liking reading again.

I have a lot of thoughts about the glorification of autocracy engendered by a lot of fairy tales, but whatever, this story is cute.

A very charming book that feels like coming home, especially if you're into Baba Yaga retellings. While this is only my second book delving into the tale of Baba Yaga, A Wolf for a Spell feels very approachable and not at all intimidating to get into. I love how this book really "humanized" wolves; the commentary on protecting nature and the animals it houses was spot on and is still quite relevant even today.

I also enjoyed how immersive a read this felt. It was very atmospheric regardless of whose perspective we were following. The dynamics between the characters added a lot more depth to the story, showing how each character's goals and motivations ultimately tied together towards one end goal.

I really liked how the author characterized Zima and the wolves. It was especially interesting to see how Zima saw the world as a wolf in a human's body and watching her learn how to do the most mundane human takss (such as getting dressed, or experiencing a hug for the first time).

The illustrations were also very darling and complemented the story quite nicely. Although I found some points in the story worked out too quickly and conveniently towards the end of the book, I still enjoyed how everything wrapped up and would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants an easy but endearing read.

I was very pleasantly surprised about how much I liked this novel, considering that I usually turn my nose up at middle grade fiction (and if I do happen to take the time to read one, I get immense enjoyment from picking apart the various inconsistencies or annoying plotholes.) But to my slight chagrin there was nothing to pick apart in this book. I enjoyed it thoroughly. Part of that may be due to the fact that I know a bit about Russian culture and it was fun to notice the little refrences to that - like all the wolves names; Veter- wind, Potok- stream, Grom - thunder, Zima - winter, Leto - summer: you get the idea. I also love stories with Baba Yaga cause it's always interesting to see the different directions authors choose to take with her as a character. Anyway, the ending of this book tied together very nicely in a very satisfying way and there were some good twists. Maybe this is the beginning of like my second middle grade era??

I love the character of Baba Yaga and will read almost anything featuring her witchy self.
This story if what you would expect of a cutesy, animals + humans coming together tale.

Why am I qualified to review this?
1) I'm a Slavic.
2) I was an orphan.
3) I studied middle grades literature for a year.

Just started this middle grades novel. So far I am liking it. Don't read too many reviews cause it spoils some of the plot lol
