I really enjoyed this book. However, if you’re like me and only want to read it because you want a history on Death Cast and how it works/how they know people are going to die… we get a POV from the creator all the way through the book and we never find out. It’s a similar story to the first book, but weaves some of the characters from it into this one and has its own heartening plot.

Do I dare say I actually liked this way more than the first one? To me, I felt like this novel had so much heart and so much love just pouring out of it, I kind of wanted to cry the entire time. This is so genuinely loving, and all of these people are just trying their best to be family before they can't anymore, and I loved it. I also spent the last 15-20% genuinely shocked at the ending which is not something that normally happens to me! It was missing a certain specific sparkle to be rated 5 stars, but it definitely got close.

Yes, The First To Die At The End is long(-ish), longer than They Both Die At The End at least, and for a whole while I thought these two will also die at the end BUT at the end of the day it is another incredibly amazing and lovable book by Adam Silvera. I could really feel with the characters and the plot kept me on the edge - just like the back and forth with the different storylines. Again, amazing application of "Chekov's gun" and amazing descriptions of falling head over heels for your first love in the most unexpected moment. I appreciate all of these characters an awful lot and hope there will be some more books in this universe

I've not found two characters this annoying in a long time. I'm not sure if it was the writing, the voice over, or a mix of both but somehow the tone of the whole book just felt insufferable. Nobody can be that earnest and wistful for 24 hours straight. The voices of the two main characters were just too sincere all the way through for me to enjoy this.

Also, the author seems to have forgotten what "show don't tell" means. Never heard more monologues in my life - "I am feeling this way because my parents died and I don't want more people to die and I am sad now and I want to do this." It's a boring way to write and I ended up rolling my eyes often when listening to the characters drone on.

I would not recommend this book. The original was much better, and I didn't even love that one. There's not much that is too different about this story to the original (still two boys who find each other and at least one is a decker and surprise surprise
they fall in love by the end
).

Save your time, find another book.
