This book is cute. If you like stories about medieval-esch worlds, books, and generally cute characters, you'll enjoy this. The trials of our protagonist desperately trying to find or make a book are intelligently thought out, educational, and endearing. It's a great read, something sweet and enjoyable.

Summary:

All she has ever wanted to do is spend time with her books. She even made the mistake of joking about how she wanted to die under a pile of books. Unfortunately, that wish came true. Oops.

Now she’s in a new life, a new body. She goes by the name of Myne, and worst of all - there are no books in this new world! Or, more accurately, they are few and far between. So, to surround herself with her beloved treasure, Myne will learn how to make books from scratch.

Review:

As a major bookworm myself, I knew that I had to give Ascendance of a Bookworm a try. I mean, come on! That said, while I enjoyed Ascendance of a Bookworm Vol. 1, I didn’t end up enjoying it as much as I had hoped.

The good: it’s cute, it’s funny, and it’s got a solid isekai basis (no truck-kun, but still). The character herself is charming, and I could see myself really growing to love the secondary characters.

The less great: Myne is cute, and her obsession is cute, but it does feel a little one-trick pony-ish. Maybe I’m being unfair, after all, but that is the premise of the story. However, the original Myne seemed to have more characterization than the new one. I’m sure this will change and grow with time, though, so I’m not going to categorize it as bad. It just needs improvement.

Highlights:
Slice-of-Life
Book about a book
Comical

Will I continue the series? Maybe?
