Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us by Seth Godin

Well, I learned that I am not a member of Seth Godin's tribe.

Superficial bumper sticker "wisdom" fills the pages of this book.

While I don't disagree with the majority of his his ideas about leadership, I've heard every one of his ideas before. I've read them in much more thought-provoking books. I've heard speakers analyze some of the concepts at conferences, workshops, & seminars. I've been part of leadership groups where our discussion had more insight than the drivel presented here.

This book reads like a series of regurgitated blog posts thrown together in a somewhat organized manner. There's a flow to the ideas, but there's no depth. Throughout the book, Godin makes no secret of how much disdain he has for anyone he deems as supporting the status quo, and he clearly sees himself as the savior whose job it is to motivate the sheep of the world to become heretics, his term for leaders in the new economy of the Internet.

Godin's holier-than-thou conclusion even states, "I can tell you that I'm going to get a lot of flak from most people about what you've just read. People might say that it's too disorganized or not practical enough or that I require you to do too much work to actually accomplish anything. That's okay. In fact, criticism like that almost always accompanies change."

Bleh! The criticism I have is that Godin's not saying anything new, so my accompanying change will be to remove his other books from my TBR.

Aunque algunos conceptos parecen un tanto anticuados oor la voragine de la vida digital, la esencia de lo que tienes que entender si quieres lograr algo, está ahí. Buen libro, tengan marcador a la mano.

There is no advice I haven't heard before. And certainly no actionable items

Some books are tediously long blog posts. This is one of them.

At first I didn't understand what I was reading. Then I finished the book and found myself researching for passion projects. This book might be to blame.

Tribes place community at the forefront, the leader merely facilitates things. It's not about the leader, it's about the movement. Foster passion and step back and watch as people contribute

The wring style is a little confusing and scattered.  It took me a little while to adjust to it before i could appreciate the finer nuances of what he trying to say.

Godin even states in the book that this is not a how to guide. It took a bit for me to get into the rhythm of this book but I did find some gems of inspiration. Strangely enough it reminded me of the book on tape Annette Benning is listening to in American Beauty (not the actual content but the feeling that this would make a great morivational tape to listen to).

Some good points, but damn that's a dry read.
