For a science fiction book written in 1896, this is an ageless tale that is beautifully told. It is subtly chilling enough to believable, which makes it all the more eerie. It’s easy to see why this is a classic, and I feel it’s worth the time invested in reading it.

Dr. Moreau aspires to create human-like beings out of parts of animals. Things go horribly wrong on his Island, however, as the young man who narrates this tale finds out. When he escapes the Island no one believes him. Written in 1896, this is grand early science fiction and points toward Huxley's Brave New World and back to Stoker's Frankenstein---the quest to recreate. It's a quick read from a good story teller.

Interesting plot, but even better because of the prescience of the science Wells describes. Early SFF isn't always reasonable science or particularly well written, but at this point my understanding of biotech and genetic research makes this book fell like a decent mix of plausible mad science and enjoyable reading.
