Made it 56% of the way thru the book before calling it.
I’m reading this in preparation for the upcoming book box that it’ll be in and am quite disappointed in this book. The writing isn’t bad, but the characters themselves are insufferable.

Love this book! When they say alien romance it truly is! Great world building and wonderful job creating a completely alien culture!

The book was a bit slow to start off but once it took off, I really enjoyed it.
I’ve read a few alien romances but one thing they all had in common was relatively human-looking heroes. Most authors seem to tweak a few features like skin/eye color. Maybe add some cat-like characteristics or the like. They are all tall and handsome with huge schlongs—maybe more than one of them—and are usually from planets where females are rare to nonexistent.
The male lead in this book was most definitely NOT one of those heroes. He looks more like a monster and in the beginning, he kind of acts like one, but he has some nice character development along the way and I found him oddly … sweet. This probably wouldn’t be to a lot of peoples’ tastes but I appreciated seeing some creativity in the alien romance genre.

This wasn't the book for me. It was a quick-paced, short story, with many omissions and missing development. I liked the idea of the story, including the male lead, Thrax, but I found the execution lacking in detail or personality.
The writing style was not my cup of tea, it was very medical and straightforward, especially during the sex scenes. Ironic, considering that Claire, the main character, chastises Thrax for being "cold", but the narration felt that way to me as well.
I loved Thrax's chapters, but I found his development inconsistent. His POV chapters were my favorite part of the story. Reading about his physiology, his structure, and how his body operated was so interesting.
The story lacks a meaningful conflict, in my opinion. Claire doesn't really have any issues with Thrax's alien body, and vice-versa. So the internal conflict in the story is just the fact that Claire wants Thrax to be more "human" with his emotions, and not quite so primitive. I don't think this was a very well-conveyed issue because I found myself agreeing with Thrax most of the time. He never really "learns" the lesson, only manipulating another character to pretend that he "empathizes" with him. It's a very weird conflict I didn't enjoy.
The climax was very confusing to me. It was supposedly the culmination of the themes of the story, in which the flaws of the Iriduan people, the thing they want to erase the most, the imprinting aspect, is what saved her. Thrax imprinted on her because he had DNA from the Iriduans.More specifically, from the lead scientist. He also imprints on her in the climax and kills himself when he finds out. This served no purpose, in my opinion. It's so inconsequential in the story. I'm not sure if it ever comes back in the rest of the series, because I'm not planning on continuing it.

4.5 stars.
This would have been a 5 star read for me if the ending didn’t happen so weird. I wanted to see what the venom did to her, and the epilogue made me cringe with how the info was said and I think the scene where she gets the card to escape was a little too easy also. Other than that I can see a lot of promise in this series and I’m super excited to read about the other aliens!

This is the most primal MMC I’ve ever read - in that he is a splice of a scorpion monster. It’s interesting to see the growth of his “humanity” throughout the book.
Claire is a curvy goth girl who gets abducted by aliens and stuck in a cage with Thrax, a scorpion hybrid, and finds herself very attracted to him.
This was read through number 2, and the reason I didn’t give 5 stars is that some details just weren’t fleshed out. Like how he talks. But still a great start to the series!
Spice: 3/5
Triggers: abduction, medical experimentation, medical SA, captivity, violence and gore
