An English painter arrives at an Irish island to paint the beautiful cliffs and quickly breaks his promise not to draw the natives. That same summer, a French linguist returns to the isle to continue his study on the loss of pure Gaelic between the living generations Meanwhile, in post-colonial Ireland the IRA and the UVF trade one victim for another.

A beautiful trip down the waving lines of questing. Questing to become a someone by moving off, moving on, taking things away, leaving things behind or just staying like an anchor.

Great read. Beautifully captured the tough realities of island life and the legacy of colonialism in Ireland. Clever use of 1979’s violence and tragedy of the troubles to provide a historical background to the plot. Thoroughly recommend.

I’m not sure how to rate this. I’m deep into a reading slump so maybe I’m not the most objective book reviewer right now. I did get through the book, which is saying something because it’s probably too long. I cared about the characters, especially James, who steals your heart. But overall, it left me sad and unsatisfied. I probably need to sit with it for a while….

Oh so many metaphors. The colonising English, the colonising French, poverty, entitlement, religion, politics. I loved it for the story and the poetry.
