True Crime Story by Joseph Knox
AudioBook Review (Crimer Thriller)
I was provided a review copy of this book by PenguinUKBooks
I was so taken in with the format of this story, to the point where I really did think
this novel was based on a true story. I even took to Google to find out more about Zoe Nolan.
Zoe, a university student in Manchester goes missing after a party. Years later and still unsolved, a writer works through the evidence, interviewing those involved to see if the mysterious disappearance of Zoe Nolan can be solved.
What was her relationship with her twin sister, also at the same university really like? There are lies, drugs, and deception aplenty. But the truth will be found, and if the police can't find the killer then an investigative writer will.
An utterly compelling book, I could not stop listening to it. As an audiobook you may find it helpful to keep a list of characters to refer to.
I've listened to a number of audiobooks now where the story is told by multiple narrators, think dramatisation, I felt so immersed, it really blurred the fiction and fact. Also, the fact that the author is inserted into this story is something I've not come across before.
An excellent audiobook!

the format wasn't what I thought it was going to be and found it very slow and boring sadly :(

This was just so much fun to read. A tight-as-a-nut who-dunnit, framed in a highly original way. All set in Manchester in 2011, my stomping ground from that time. So, weirdly the geography and people seem so familiar it’s doubly real: Big Hands and The Deaf Institute and The Temple bar are all referenced. The plot itself is very Twin Peaks: Zoe Nolan is a popular girl with secretssssss

this book is formatted as a series of spliced-together interviews with a fictional cast who are being interviewed about the disappearance of their friend/girlfriend/sister years before. it's interspersed with emails between the woman doing the interviews and her writer friend, and part of the story is the arc of their relationship and what happens to them. it is written to emulate a true crime novel, and its format is certainly interesting and new.
unfortunately, it just dragged a bit for me. the characters were not super compelling to me, with the exception of the victim's twin sister. it was ultimately kind of repetitive and too long for what it was; plus, the ending didn't really pay off. it felt rushed and out of left field (and not in a fun way, if that makes sense?)
if you like a true crime theme, maybe this will work for you!
