This was a reread for me. I adore this series, and while this might be the weakest of the five books released so far, there’s still lots of good stuff. Brienne and Cersei are great narrative characters, but the absence of Tyrion, Jon, Dany and others is noticeable.

"All you Westerosi make a shame of loving. There is no shame in loving. If your septons say there is, your seven gods must be demons. In the isles we know better. Our gods gave us legs to run with, noses to smell with, hands to touch and feel. What mad cruel god would give a man eyes and tell him he must forever keep them shut, and never look at all the beauty in the world? Only a monster god, a demon in the darkness."

Read 1: Where are Tyrion and Jon? Who are all these characters I don't care about? Dorne?!

Read 2: This is actually pretty good now that I have my expectations set correctly.

Read 3: This is the best book in the series.

From my point of view there is two ways that I can judge this book. The first view being that the book is the last of the series. If that is the case, the book is sub-par compared to it's previous brethren. From a second perspective, GRRM is setting us all up for a grand finally. If this is the case, the book is brilliant.

Whew. Book #4 covers a TON of ground, and definitely carries the story forward. But with less action, the book is a little less engaging than other entries in the series. Still a great read though, and I'm looking forward to Book #5!
