3.5 stars. Enjoyed this much more than the last volume and was genuinely surprised at some of the reveals.

Initially skeptical about how vol 5 was going to continue the story, it won me over by the end.
The pace slows tremendously. I usually read Deadly Class volumes in one sitting, but this one took me three sittings. But that's okay!! I welcomed the change of pace, as it helped flesh out our new (mostly lovable) characters. Plus, we all knew the slow pace wasn't going to continue for long, considering the last two sequences of the volume.
Excited to see where things go from here.

Volumes 3-5 in this series follow up on the very cliff hanger ending of volume 2. The Mexicans come after the gang for killing chico. We end the first year and start a new one. A lot of killing and culling happens and simultaneously we really get the hardships of navigating school. Fascinatingly well balanced between violence and action on the one side and slice of life on the other and very well interweaved.

This was a really good installment. I loved that it followed Saya so closely. The new characters are great and liked being out of Marcus' head. Dude is depressing. The D&D part was kinda weird but fun.

I'm almost afraid to give Deadly Class five star ratings, as if the books will nosedive as soon as I acknowledge them as being among my favorite comics ever, but I do love this series and I'll probably retroactively tweak them all to 5 stars once I see how it all ends.
...no, that was not a weird thing to say. Haven't you ever loved a book so much you had cold feet about marrying it? I'm not reading my vows until I hear Remender & Craig's first.
