not my favorite nick cutter book, but still a wild ride. my favorite line was delivered by the token corrupted priest during a pivotal drink-the-koolaid moment:

“i’ve never lied to you,” he lied. “i never have lied to you.”

there’s something about the blunt delivery that made me chuckle at the absurdity. i find myself quoting it when i watch things on the news.

3.5 rounded up - I feel like it didn’t need to be 500 pages but it was good and weird and at times confusing just because it’s so weird. Out of the Cutter books I’ve read this one falls solidly into second place for me.

The "Big Bad" of this book is a uniquely terrifying and creative one, and that's how this book earned most of its stars for me. IMO it lacks the grandiosity and universality of cosmic horror, but the idea of an old god that views humans as less than insects is very lovecraftian.
Minus one star because of the treatment of sexuality, which falls into common tropes used to make horror more disturbing/unfomfortable to read. It wasn't necessary and for me it took away from the genuinely terrifying nature of the entity at the center of the narrative.

Not a review as I only got about 20% in but notes for myself. Have to star it in order to write notes.

Nothing wrong with the writing here. Very good and will try him again as I liked the Troop (that was him, right?). But this story and these characters aren't for me. I don't care or like any of them, though I think they're all portrayed well and I suspect if I read all the way through I might come to care. But I rarely slough through books to get to the good parts anymore.
I think all three characters would make great, colorful side or secondary or supporting characters.
