It says a lot about our times that writing a book with this title would have meant mostly historical research. Now someone like Stanley only needs to look around and observe everyday politics and life in any western society and many places elsewhere. There's little new here to people with rudimentary knowledge of European history, but what is said is packaged really well into an accessible and important statement. Most importantly, Stanley does not shy away from calling fascists what they are. That is a rare commodity in today's media landscape.

An important read for those interested in not becoming a fascist state. I listened to this as an audiobook and almost wish I had a physical copy to highlight and write notes in. It was very informative and at times hard to digest due to the extensive political terminology, but I still recommend it to anyone who wants to better understand the fragility of democracy and what, specifically, fascism means and looks like.

An essential read
I don't think I've ever bookmarked or highlighted a book more. This is a modern classic an absolutely essential read to come to terms with recent political developments.

The book is not perfect, but I feel like it is a must read to think about our time. And it is an easy and fluid read.
